MIKE YACONELLI

We are all struggling to digest the tragic news of Mike's death. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work alongside Mike, one of the most exciting authors we have published at Hodder over the last few years. He had a gentle heart, a razor-sharp mind and wild sense of humour; he was unique, much-loved and will be sorely missed by many thousands here in the UK.

Mike's published books included Messy Spirituality (subtitled 'Christianity for the rest of us'), which Hodder published in 2001. This is probably the book that people most often tell me is their personal favourite from our list. It is one of those rare books that leaves you thinking: 'That writer knows exactly how I feel, the questions I ask and the longings of my heart.'

Hodder had also commissioned Mike to write a new book, scheduled for publication in September 2004. With a working title of Impersonating Ourselves, it was to address what Mike described as 'the daily struggle to be our real selves. It's about the day we wake up and realise life is much more complicated than we thought. When we look in the mirror and realise we are not who people think we are.' Those few words in themselves are probably sufficient for anybody who knew Mike's ministry to appreciate that another great, truly liberating book was on its way. His writing brought pleasure and healing to many people, and he will be sorely missed.
